• Updated electrical safety reports every five years

• Clear fire escape routes, free from clutter

Essential checks to carry out

• Smoke and heat alarms - Test regularly and replace batteries or units as needed. In Scotland, interlinked alarms are mandatory; many landlords in England and Wales are also choosing to upgrade.

• Fire doors and exits - Check self-closing devices and ensure doors shut properly.

• Furniture and furnishings - All supplied items must meet fire resistance standards.

• Kitchens - Pay particular attention to cookers and extractor fans, where many fires begin.
